Speaking of the advantage, parents can spend money only for one child. Nowadays, a lot of money is spent to raise children. Especially in Korea, enthusiasts of  mothers for education are not able to be stopped. They enroll an incredibly expensive English kindergarten for their children, even before they can speak Korean fluently. You can be curios that if they do not want to let their children go in the English kindergarten, they might be able not to do that. However, in Korea, there is a famous saying among the mothers these days. 'If their children did not graduate in the English kindergarten, even though they have so brilliant brain, their children's grade start from 15th among 30 students. Thus, the parents can not help letting their children in the dear kindergarten. We should accept a truth that education affect people's life, especially aspect of economic. That is the reason that the parents of this generation choose to have the only child. They prefer that their child feel lonely than they suffer from economic difficulty in their whole life.
On the other hand, the disadvantage of having an only child is that they can feel lonely as being said in the former sentence. Types of family are changing clearly. They are becoming smaller and smaller. The family ,which is completed only parents and children, is quite usual in this generation. Thus, if you have the only child, your family members might be only three people. As long as your only child do not have any close cousin, they will live their life somehow lonely. Because, when the parents pass away, they will lose all close family who is connected with blood. Even if, naturally, life is surviving alone, they might have fear being alone in the universe.
Having an only child could have some merits and demerits like these. Before you and your spouse make a plan to have family, you have to consider these both aspects and make wise decision.
